Volvo AB will begin trials of driverless buses in Singapore, as the city joins the race for autonomous public transport.

With a capacity of 80 passengers per vehicle the trials will begin at the campus of Nanyang Technological University.

Singapore has expressed its intentions to schedule driverless buses during off-peak hours in certain residential areas of the city by 2022.

Volvo Buses president, Hakan Agnevall, stated that the new electric buses “represents a key milestone for the industry.”

“The journey towards full autonomy is undoubtedly a complex one.”
