Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan received a major loss on Sunday’s elections as his party is likely to lose grip of the country’s capital Ankara and Istanbul.

Erdogan has been monopolizing Turkish politics since he took over office 16 years ago and this has been a matter of survival for his career as a weakening economy has made voters choose a different path despite his daily rallies and constant media coverage.

The opposition’s leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said that, “The people have voted in favour of democracy, they have chosen democracy.”

Defeat for Erdogan’s party in Ankara was a significant blow for the president and losing Istanbul, where he launched his political career and served as mayor in the 1990s, would be an even greater symbolic shock.
