Claude Monet’s “Meules” painting, completed in 1890 and part of the celebrated “Haystacks” series, has fetched over $100 million in auction.

It is as it stands a record for an Impressionist art piece, according to Sotheby’s whom handled the sale of the oil on canvas masterpiece.

Also, it is the highest amount fetched at an auction for one of the French artist’s works.

The works of the “Haystacks” series are widely acclaimed for capturing the play of light on Monet’s subject and for their influence on the Impressionist movement, for which he is one of the pioneers.

Most works in the series have long been displayed in top world museums, from the Getty Center in Los Angeles to the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
