Google has halted any further deliveries of software and technical services to Huawei, which itself is a huge blow considering the tech giant’s smartphone business.

As the world’s number two smartphone manufacturer, Huawei relies heavily on Google’s Android operating system.

The suspension comes in following Washington’s move to add Huawei to its export blacklist, meaning companies would have to seek government approval prior to selling any parts, components or software to the Chinese tech company.

While the Android operating system is open source and publicly available, Huawei will no longer be able to access proprietary apps and services from Google, however it will still be able to access the publicly-available version of Android.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” said a Google in an earlier statement, it did add that its Google Play app store and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.

A Huawei spokesperson merely said that they were “looking into the situation.”
