Ford to cut 10% of its global workforce

According to an email sent to employees, Ford Motor Co. is planning to cut 7,000 of its global workforce by the end of August as part of its new program, named Smart Redesign.

That would mean a 10% cut and would save the automaker somewhere around $600 million a year.

The moves will reduce the company's management structure by close to 20%, said the email.

"We also made significant progress in eliminating bureaucracy, speeding up decision making and driving empowerment as part of this redesign," it said.
