Xi Jinping has decided to reach out to Taiwan in a bid to ease tensions between the two countries, given the current slowing status of the Chinese economy and the ongoing trade war with Washington.

In a speech held earlier in the day, Xi pointed to the unification of China and Taiwan as an "inevitable requirement" adding that it would bring "great rejuvination to China", however did not rule out the use of force bringingthe two together.

He cited that other influences such as external forces and extreme separatists would bear the brunt of China's muscle in case force would indeed be the way forward.

"The Taiwan issue was caused by weakness and chaos, and it will certainly be ended with the rise of our nation," adding that "no one can block" it.

while Beijing may seem hasty to get the issue resolved, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen stated, "It must acknowledge the fact of the existence of the Republic of China (Taiwan)."

"2019 is a year to fight for our livelihoods, to safeguard our democracy and to protect the nation's sovereignty."
