Donald Trump has sent a strong warning to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a typical not-so-subtle statement Trump made it clear that he will not tolerate any attacks of Turkish forces onto the US backed Kurdish forces which have aided the fight against ISIS in Syria.

“Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms.”

“Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds. Create 20 mile safe zone…Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey.”

Part of the US withdrawal from Syria, announced last week by Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton, was subject to Turkey reassuring the safety of Kurdish forces.

This in turn seemed to provoke the Turkish government and prompted Erdogan to state that Bolton had made a “serious mistake.”
