Theresa May will head back to London in what was a futile attempt to gain assurance from Brussels, as the EU leaders put it in writing, "The Union stands by this agreement and intends to proceed with its ratification. It is not open for renegotiation."

With Luxembourg’s premier adding, “Theresa May did the best possible deal and now MPs in London should be responsible and to know if they want to have the best possible deal or want to go in the direction where they don't know what will come out."

"It's in the interest of their citizens."

The British PM had high hopes that the Irish backstop issue, which would theoretically make Northern Ireland follow E.U. rules as there would not be a hard border between the two countries.

As events unfolded sterling found itself down 0.6% against the U.S. dollar at $1.2591, and fell 0.3% against the Euro.
