Malaysian King abdicates just after 2 years

For the first time in Malaysian history, its king has abdicated the throne.

Following much speculation, and rather unexpectedly, 49-year-old King Sultan Muhammad V relinquished his duties following two years at the throne.

The 15th king of Malaysia did not give a reason as to why the sudden decision, however, he has been rumoured to have married former Russian beauty queen Oksana Voevodina during a medical leave last November in Moscow.

Although reports by Russian and British media were graphic in showing the events of the marriage, Malaysia’s PM Mahatir Mohamad stated that

Nevertheless, it will be down to the Council of Rulers to choose the next in line to take the throne, albeit the role being ceremonial the Muslim community holds the position as the upholder of tradition within the country.
