Japan hinted that it is planning to halt purchasing Huawei’s equipment in an effort to strengthen its security against intelligence leaks and cyberattacks.

Washington is keeping a close eye on Chinese tech companies, especially after the latest accusations of Beijing’s involvement in the Marriott hacking scandal and meanwhile Huawei has been locked out of U.S. and Australia’s markets and New Zealand has stopped the company’s 5G network development.

“Cybersecurity is becoming an important issue in Japan,” said Japan’s chief government spokesman, Yoshishi Suga, adding that, “We’ll take firm measures looking at it from a variety of perspectives.”

That statement of course got Beijing’s attention, the foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a statement that he hoped Japan,“can provide a fair competition environment for Chinese companies operating in Japan and not do anything to harm bilateral cooperation and mutual trust.”
