Huawei CFO arrested over breaking trade sanction laws
- 7 months ago
Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou has been arrested in Canada and is facing extradition to the U.S. where she is facing accusations of breaking U.S. sanction laws.
The instance in question may be linked to an incident in 2016 when the U.S. justice department claimed the Chinese company was shipping U.S. origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of U.S. export and sanctions laws.
Ms. Meng is the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei and also is one of the vice chairs on the company’s board.
Unsurprisingly China has denounced the arrest and has requested her immediate release and it couldn’t come at a more sensitive time as relations between Washington and Beijing are on thin ice.
With that however both the U.S. attorney’s office and the U.S. justice department have declined to comment on the issue.
