Huawei has taken out full-page ads in major New Zealand newspapers in an attempt to win over favoritism, in the advertisement the full page reads, “5G without Huawei is like rugby without New Zealand”, in which they equate the idea of their ban imposed by the New Zealand government.

National telecommunications network operator Spark has been prohibited to use Huawei equipment in their 5g technology rollout following the New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) stated that by using Huawei’s would pose “significant national security risks”.

Other governments have had issues regarding Huawei’s links to Beijing’s security and intelligence services, not to mention the recent arrest of the company’s CFO Meng Wanzhou, in connection to breaking international sanction laws.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern dismissed claims the Huawei ban had any impact on diplomatic ties, and insisted New Zealand was not pushed into the decision by other countries.

The Kiwi president stated, “Some of the issues of Huawei has been raised a couple of times. But actually the decision around 5G and how that is rolled out is governed by a regulation, a process that checks that whatever decision we make is in the best interest of New Zealanders data and security.”

Fellow countries that either have concerns or issued bans on the use of Huawei 5G technology include the US, Australia, Japan, the UK, India, Germany and Italy.
